North Carolina State Education Licensing Requirements:
To learn more about how to apply for a North Carolina Professional Educator’s License, visit http://www.ncpublicschools.org/licensure/beginning/. Please note that North Carolina does not have 100% reciprocity with any state.
Professional Educator's Initial Licenses are intended for teachers with 0-2 years of teaching experience, and are valid for three years. To be issued a Professional Educator's Initial License, an individual must have completed a state approved teacher education program from a regionally accredited college or university, or completed another state's approved alternative route to licensure and earned a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college, and must have completed the following exams:
- Praxis II Testing - for middle grades (6-9), secondary (9-12), and K-12 (including Exceptional Children: General Curriculum) license areas.
- Pearson Testing for North Carolina (http://www.nc.nesinc.com/): Foundations of Reading and General Curriculum - for Elementary Education and Exceptional Children: General Curriculum licenses only.
The NCDPI Online Licensure System is found at https://vo.licensure.ncpublicschools.gov/datamart/loginNCDPI.do;jsessionid=4429AF06CBD5C989CC7F58FE 44467C07.i-3f4de6c0.
A non-refundable service fee of $85 is required for Out-of-State Initial Educator applicants.
Out-of-state individuals who are approved for a NC teaching license in the primary area of certification may also be granted a NC teaching license in any content area(s) that were subsequently added to the initial license by passing a licensure exam in another state, provided NC has a comparable license area.
Please visit http://www.ncpublicschools.org/licensure/ for more information. The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction may be contacted at 919.807.3300 or at http://www.dpi.state.nc.us/newsroom/lets-talk/. It is highly recommended that you contact this office to confirm this information.
