South Dakota State Education Licensing Requirements:

All educators new to South Dakota must complete the initial certification requirements as well as an approved three-credit South Dakota Indian Studies course and a three-credit Human Relations course. Initial certification includes completing an online initial application (found at https://apps.sd.gov/DE04Public/TeacherCertification/SDDOEOnlineApplications.aspx) (or paper at removed) and requires verification from an accredited university that the candidate has completed an approved education program. Individuals may receive a one-year certificate if they have completed a teacher education program, but do not have the required six transcripted credits obtained in the past five years, the required SD Indian Studies course, and/or the required Praxis II tests. If all of the requirements have been met, a candidate may apply for a five-year certificate. Please see http://www.doe.sd.gov/oatq/teachercert.aspx for all documentation to include with the application. A non-refundable fee of $25 for the one-year certificate or $51 for the five-year certificate must accompany the application.

Please visit http://www.doe.sd.gov/oatq/teachercert.aspx for more information. The South Dakota Department of Education may be contacted at 605.773.3134 or by email at [email protected]. It is highly recommended that you contact this office to confirm this information.

Please note that requirements are subject to change. You may find more licensing information for each state at https://www.ed.gov.

SRU Teacher Candidates MAY use their PA certifications to apply for comparable certifications in this state DEPENDING ON THIS STATE’S DEPT. OF ED’S EVALUATION AND ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS.
